  Metamorphosis - 2016 Fourth Biennale China-Italia of Contemporary Art to be hold in Beijing




Compared with others, artists are always looking for something unusual and unique, whose power can help people better understand some or all things. Therefore, metamorphosis could be seen as a transformative change from the inside to the outside, and it can also open a door to enhanced humanity, thoughts, fantasies and richness of realities. We believe that art is the creator of change, and a way to prove that humans know how to advance the past.

The fourth Biennale China-Italia of Contemporary Art is scheduled to open on August 27, 2016 in Beijing and the Biennale would be held in three venues, the 798 Art Zone, No. 3 Plastic Cultural Park, and Manet Art Museum. With the first Biennale held in 2012, the Biennale has been held in Italy and China in turn since then. As an cultural interaction of the forefront creations of two most ancient countries, China and Italy, the event has been held for three times.

Themed "Metamorphosis", the old factory of Beijing No. 3 Plastic Cultural Park covering 3,000 square meters was renovated to highlight the concept of "metamorphosis" in post-industrial era, and the 1, 200 square meters exhibition hall of Beijing Manet Art Museum and the wonderful space of Taihe Art Gallery are also venues of the two-month event. Against the backdrop of acute civilization clashes, the event, gathering more than 90 prominent Chinese and Italian artists, holds a dialogue between the frontiers of two ancient civilizations. "Metamorphosis is man's expectations of advancing the past and grasping the future, and we put that hope on our artists," said Wang Jingyi, chief curator of this Biennale, "and all the debates and discussions that may arise therefrom, which is the value and significance of the Biennale and the basis of its reputation." Sandro Orlandi, chief curator of the Italian side, said, "we believe that art is the creator of change, and a way to prove that humans know how to advance the past."

The fourth Biennale China-Italia comprises of three parts: The Current World, Supergene, New Brushwork in Metamorphosis. Among them, "The Current World", on the basis of contemporary situation, invited many major artists from China and Italy, including Italian artists Piero Glardi, Lucio Pozzi, Marco Bolognesi, Andrea Chiesi, Franco Mazzucchelli and Chinese artists Ai Weiwei, He Yunchang, Yuan Gong, Li Zhanyang, Ye Yongqing, Shi Jinsong, Yu Xinqiao, Yang Na. In the context of globalization they focus on pressing onward art history, as well as the relationship of art with society, politics, human relations, etc. "Supergene" exhibition unit consists of individual projects by artists and sub-themes exhibitions. All the content has went through curators' in-depth interviews with artists and careful selection, with the aim of presenting pluralistic aesthetics, various voices and the strides of the future. "New Brushwork in Metamorphosis" exhibition unit, as a dialogue and exchange with Italian civilization, pays tribute to China's Italian friends Matteo Ricci and Giuseppe Castiglione, who are related to the history of Chinese painting in the past centuries, and associated with inheritance of tradition and innovative thinking.

A "Global Art Museum Directors Forum" attended by directors or leaders of several major European art museums will also be part of this Biennale. The Forum will hold a panel on the topic of "basic structures of private museums." Major leaders or curators of five major art institutions have confirmed their attendance, including Dali Foundation, Prado Art Museum, Museo Guggenheim Bilbao. As to the choice of topic, Mian Bu, chairwoman of the art council of the Biennale said "artists' work is closely related to civilization, and the creation, development, funding and promotion of civilization are all indelible contributions to the world. Just like a century ago, in the birthplace of the Biennale, Venice, without sponsorship and support of the regional enlightened merchants and nobles, there would be not world-renowned grand event still held today. Hopefully all the efforts of our colleagues for the Biennale China-Italia will pay off."

Starting from this Biennale event, the Biennale China-Italia will be fully open to market operation. "Art history is the history of art market, and marketing for outstanding works is something that all art institutions should be proud of" said Ji Xiaofeng, Director of Operations for the China side of the Biennale Organizing Committee, when asked about the attitude on cooperation with the market. He said, " predominance by academics is self-evident, but to involve more people to the Biennale calls for market-based operation. "

1 基本概念:中国-意大利当代艺术双年展,是在中国和意大利,一年各在一个国家一次,共同主办的关于当代艺术年度在中意两个国家前沿表现和最新探索的大型展览,以及多层面的艺术交流活动。该双年展突出特点在于:只有中国或意大利国家身份的艺术家参展。

第一届,自然之沉思,意大利 蒙扎、米兰、利索尼,2012年9月-11月;第二届,记忆,中国 北京,2014年6月-9月;第三届,艺术的长生不老药,意大利 都灵,2015年6月-9月;第四届,蜕变,中国 北京,2016年8月27日开幕。

2 双年展宗旨:中国、意大利两个最古老文化国家体系中,最前沿的当代艺术展示、互动和交流事件。它关注两个国家不同文化背景下的当代存在境遇,以及两国艺术家如何在美术史的视角下实验和表达;它关注最杰出的艺术家群体,城市精神生活的改善和多元对话,对于乡村生活的激活和改造也逐渐纳入双年展视野;

3 双年展发展方向:中意双年展将逐渐发展成影响中意两国和全球的美术馆、艺术机构、艺术院校、艺术家、收藏群体、艺术爱好者、艺术相关衍生产业从业机构和从业者等形成核心影响力,并成为展示欧亚最前沿的当代艺术创作成果的重要展线,成为以商业化运营,民间力量支持的国际性艺术项目的典范。
